Renewable energy advocates discuss future of traditional utility companies

The one person who wasn’t a member of the Northwest Energy Coalition was the one most of the 100 members wanted to hear from at the advocacy group’s spring conference in Missoula.

So NorthWestern Energy Corp. Chief Executive Officer Bob Rowe spent an hour taking questions from the audience about how Montana’s biggest energy utility plans to deal with the fate of Colstrip power plants, renewable energy sources and how traditional power companies will co-exist with changing public desires.

Rowe combined an unusual history of three terms on the Montana Public Service Commission with his current post leading NWE. As Missoula’s Human Resource Council Director Jim Morton put it in his introduction, Rowe “has the same staff reporting to him now that he was cross-examining a few years ago.”
