Clean up the grid and electrify everything

Amid uncertainty about what recent election results will mean for environmental policy and the fate of the planet, a remarkable clarity pervaded the NW Energy Coalition Clean & Affordable Energy conference this past Thursday in Portland. David Roberts, Vox energy and climate columnist and the conference’s keynote speaker, opened the day by reminding an audience of more than two-hundred that, regardless of coming battles and possible changes in energy and environmental policy both in Washington DC and in the Northwest, there remains a simple imperative. If we are to avoid doing catastrophic damage to the planet and to ourselves, “we must clean up the grid and electrify everything.”

Hundreds testify for clean energy and salmon provisions in 7th Northwest Power and Conservation Plan

A series of eight public hearings on the Northwest Power and Conservation Council’s draft 7th Plan drew hundreds of clean energy, climate and endangered salmon advocates expressing support for the Council’s embrace of energy efficiency to meet virtually all new power demands through the plan’s 20-year horizon.

Hundreds turn out for engrossing, inspirational Fall 2015 Clean & Affordable Energy Conference and Awards Gala

To say the NW Energy Coalition’s Dec. 3-4 fall conference and 2015 awards gala were big successes would be a gross understatement. More than 150 people jammed the Washington State Conference Center in Seattle on Thursday to hear from a variety of panelists.

Conference spotlight: Climate science and our changing hydrograph

Dr. Joe Casola of the UW’s Climate Impacts Group will provide the framing address for the NW Energy Coalition’s Clean & Affordable Energy Conference. He will prepare the audience for the policy panels that follow by providing the latest climate science, with a focus on the Northwest’s changing hydrograph and how these changes affect hydropower production and salmon survival.
